Sailors build a skiff

The Dory ShopFor more than a week now, Jay has had a group of students from the Picton Castle Bosun School working with him in The Dory Shop. The Bosun School is a land-based program aimed at young mariners who wish to advance their skills away from the necessary distractions of a ship that’s underway at sea. This is the third running of the program and we’re delighted to have young sailors from Canada, the USA, Finland, Iceland and Denmark in attendance.

The Dory ShopDuring their 14-week program here in Lunenburg, the group will receive instruction in a number of areas including advanced ropework and hawsers, proper bosun chair work, tar and oil mixtures, serving, yards, cotton and dacron sail repair, basic sail making, varnish work, basic carpentry, pitching, vessel and boat caulking, wire seizings and wire splicing, rigs and rigging, topmasts and oh yes, small boat building.

Having just completed our regular fall dory building course, Capt. Moreland and Jay decided this group should build a lapstrake skiff. And just to make things more interesting, this skiff is being built using select tropical hardwoods for maximum durability and longevity.
